There are three ways you can get an item - first, each floor you clear in a mystery dungeon gives you one item. Second, you can buy them from shops, either run by NPCs or other players. Finally, there will often be giveaways on the site where you can post for a free item. Be sure and keep an eye out for these!
There are far too many items on the site for me to list here - however, whenever you obtain an item, a staff member will provide a description of its properties for you. If you're the one selling items in a shop, you are in charge of giving the description in the transaction - if you can't remember what it was, you're welcome to PM a staff member for it. As for how certain items work...
-GUMMIES-
Like in the games, gummies will increase your IQ. If the gummi is the same type as you, it boosts your IQ by two points. If it's not the same type as you, it only boosts it by one. Every ten points, you'll obtain half a star, which gives you access to more IQ skills depending on your group. Once you obtain an IQ skill, a staff member will notify you, and you can add it to your app.
-STAT/PP BOOSTING ITEMS-
As we don't record stats or PP here, PP transfers to HP and stats become temporary items that last for the entirety of a single battle. For example, ingesting an iron would temporarily add +1 to your defense. As a result, these items are more common.
-EVOLUTIONARY ITEMS-
If your Pokémon evolves via item and meets the requirements to evolve, then you may choose for them to evolve at any time. The items disappear afterwards. Also, Pokémon that evolve via happiness require a Soothe Bell rather than a certain amount of IQ.
-TMS-
There is a TM for every non-signature move here, rather than just a few, and a Pokémon can learn ANY move from them as long as you can come up with how it would work. For example, a Torchic could learn Surf to cross water, but how would they do so? A surfboard? Exceptional swimming skills? Also, if a Pokémon can naturally fly, swim, dig, etc., they are capable of doing either without the TM, but cannot take other Pokémon with them. If they cannot, then learning the TM simply makes themselves capable of doing so and they cannot take anyone else along.
-CHESTS-
Chests will contain either one family item or one uncommon+ item. To open them, you need to bring them to someone who has the skills to do so. Family items will always belong to your species or the species of a team member.
-FAMILY ITEMS-
They act just the same as in the games, and you can trade matching sets in for a more powerful item at special shops. You may also trade them in here for another item of equal value, or an equivalent amount of Poké.
